Dear RLC Families:

WELCOME BACK, WE'VE MISSED YOU!

Hopefully you have had a great summer, found some rest, and are ready to get back to building your brain power.

I reread the book "Energy Bus" by Jon Gordon this past year and want to encourage you as a family to consider one part of the book with me. Gordon points out a bus indicates where it is going with a word or a phrase on front, for instance, if it is going to Seattle it might say "King St." The idea behind the word on the front of the bus is that we know where the bus is going. What Gordon suggests is that we choose a word to put on the front of our bus to focus on where we are going.

I chose to have two focus areas for this year, in essence a bus at school and a bus at home. For my work in the Riverview School District (RLC included), my word is "Cultivating Leadership" - OK, I cheated - it's a phrase.  For home, my word for this period of time is "Thoughtfulness." By making these my focus areas for the coming months I can focus in on how to develop the leaders around me at work, and be thoughtful with my family considering their day-to-day needs at home. I would challenge you all to choose a word to put on the front of your bus as we begin this school year.

During the summer, our custodian, Mr. Coble, has been working diligently to prepare the facilities for the new school year and you will see the results as soon as you enter the building. Teachers are learning and planning new things, new staff have been added, new students are entering our programs, and we are ready for the beginning of the year!

Make sure to check out the "Comings and Goings" for a quick introduction to new staff. Also, be sure to find the information below on Picture Day, new school start and end times, transportation, and all the other exciting things in the next month or so.

Sincerely,

John Bomar

Riverview Learning Center Principal

COMINGS AND GOINGS AT THE RLC

In case you hadn't heard, we have added a couple more members of our team here at RLC:

Adam Del Rosso will be teaching our High School PARADE English and Social Studies in place of Ms. Hoffman who decided to relocate to Austin, TX to be near family this summer. Mr. Del Rosso has been working for many years as a project manager and we are excited to have him start his career in teaching with us at the RLC. His congenial affect on students and those he comes in contact with is contagious and we are glad he is working with our students.

Another addition over the summer includes Mrs. Nelson as a Counselor Intern. We are excited to help her increase her learning in this area and to have additional resources and support for our students and families.

Please welcome Mr. Del Rosso and Mrs. Nelson when you have the opportunity.

Dam Evacuation Drill Information

Wednesday, September 27, 2017, is the day designated for Riverview Learning Center students and staff to participate in a Tolt Dam partial Evacuation Drill. As many of you know, the Riverview School District participates in a simulation, along with local agencies, in the event of a dam breach. At approximately 9:30 AM, on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, students at the Riverview Learning Center, Tolt Middle School, and Carnation Elementary will participate in this drill.

This year's drill is a partial evacuation which means we will walk the route to the bottom of the hill where the staging area, the gravel pit, is located in the Tolt Highlands.

Students and adults classified as medically fragile will walk from the RLC and board busses that will depart from Carnation Elementary and will take to the road leading up to the staging area. If you have concerns about your student walking this distance, please call the main office at 425-844-4960 ONLY IF YOUR STUDENT IS UNABLE TO WALK AND NEEDS TO RIDE THE BUS.

PARADE families: This only applies to students who attend PARADE on Wednesday morning.

Please remind your students to dress warm and wear sturdy shoes. We are hopeful the weather will be cooperative; however, if the day brings a downpour of rain, we will cancel the drill.

Remember our emergency drills are all part of working together to help keep students prepared and safe.
